“I need to talk to my co-founder.” Prevent it, then reframe it.
Most partner objections at the end of a call are a smokescreen for money, time or trust. The fix has two parts: prevent it in the middle of the call, and reframe it if it still comes up.
It makes them defend the partner. Agree first, then help them see it as a necessity.
- Step 1
Prevent it (mid-call)
“Does your co-founder know you're on this call, or is this a secret mission?”
- Tone
- Playful.
- Then
- “How does he feel about you closing every deal yourself, 60 hours a week?” Use “feel”, not “think”.
- Lock it
- “Does he want that to change, or should everything stay the same?”
- Step 2
If it still comes up: agree
“Totally get it…”
- Why it works
- No argument, no pressure. They're open for one more question.
- Step 3
Necessity frame
“If your site went down on Black Friday… would you ask your co-founder for permission to call a developer?”
- They say
- “No, I'd fix it immediately.”
- Step 4
Reframe
“Because it's a necessity… Would you say fixing your close rate isn't just as much a necessity?”
- Tone
- Concerned.
- Result
- Either they decide, or the real concern comes out: money, timing or trust.
- Step 5
Off the record
“Just between us… what specifically do you want to discuss with them?”
- When
- If they still want to talk first. Book the follow-up with both of them before you hang up.
